What happen to Backpages

Recommended Posts

I have had to check it out myself and here is what I found. Once I was on backpage today and could only see the Canada wide sources and the second time I was able to see Canada and USA. It might have been a different site that I clicked on when I was choosing backpage.

I say try it again another time and it might work.

Weird thing happened when I was in the states last June. When I tried to log in to Backpage.ca using my laptop connected to the hotel's WiFi, I was redirected to Backpage.com with no options for Canadian provinces or cities. My understanding was that the hotel is connected to the web through Comcast.

If I used my phone on the T-Mobile network, I could get to Backpage.ca no problem.

Go figure!

You can access the Toronto portion of Backpage from the US if you search for NOW magazine Toronto. Then go to adult classifieds.

I'm back in the States and now, I can't get to backpage.ca at all. My T-Mobile way of getting there, worked last summer, has also been rerouted to us.backpage.com

Amreican legislators believe that by banning 'Adult Sections' from classified ads that they will eliminate such and such activity and/or what they see as 'crime'.

All it does is to put every advertiser in the same section (e.g. massage). That way, they think the problems are gone. Now the legit RMTs and LMTs are thrown among all the others. Not clear for someone that's looking for a legit massage with receipt. Same for putting escorts with legit dating personal ads.

And now, they're denying access to Americans to see what's going on in other parts of the world. The guy living in Buffalo, or Detroit can't see what's in ANY Canadian backpage ad, censorship obliges. He can't even see what available in Canada for anything on Backpage!

This censorship and redirecting to the American Backpage bears some ressemblance to the way internet is controlled in China or Russia.

And they call themselves the Land Of The Free???

It's a question of time before the same happens in Canada. Kijiji and CL used to have a dating and adult section, not anymore. Now SP's and MA's all share the therapeutic section. Won't take many years(or months) before BP Canada does the same.

I miss the good old days when they advertised in the Newspaper and Yellow Pages.

get a vpn. you can chose what server (aka country) you need to be in to avoid regional restrictions.

A simpler way is to install the TOR browser. (Heck, If I was able to do it, anyone can! LOL). It's simply a browser like Chrome or Firefox. Some say it's slow, but I didn't see that much of a difference. There's also an android version, in that case an auxiliary program called Orbot has to also be installed. I don't understand the exact mechanics of it, but it seems to go through many IP addresses in many countries, causing complete confusion to the US 'censors'.

Additional Comments:

BP seems to have a sister site, just replace BP with postfastr in the URL address.

Some SOB hobbyist should try it and give us some feedback.

Looks like the adult section has been replaced with a dating section now.

yes they've been posting under the dating section for a while now.

Also, it was backpage's execs choice to close the escort section, not a legal requirement. Like CL, they did it to make a point. That's why other countries are not affected.

also, unlike before, those dating sections require payments, where before i am pretty sure it was free.

I'm in the States right now, and if I try to get to see the Ottawa BP, no way! I get rerouted to Backpage USA. My workaround is to use the TOR browser (See post #15 in this thread). It works!

By knocking out access to BP.ca because of the adult industry, BP somewhat hurt all other advertising sectors in urbanized areas straddled by the border such as Windsor/Detroit, Niagara, etc...

And those 'mercans accuse other countries of Internet censorship...

Jeff Sessions and friends have seized the entire Backpage site in the states. It's not clear to me if the Canadian site was affected, it was a bit complicated for me to access already. Craigslist has removed the 'Therapeutic' listing.

Predictable result: There will be more streetwalkers, more activity in those 'meet market' bars, etc... Will it take down the Industry? No way. Other sites will carry on in a different manner.

And they call this place 'The Land of the Free'...

This is critical for me since I have a pre-planned trip to Melbourne in August and can't advertise on their backpage site!! Guess I'm spending the next week searching out other reputable sites. Freaking Americans have crippled not just the working girls in the States but all over the world...DON'T get me wrong! I have nothing against Americans...just the self-righteous bible thumpers ;)

Cl didn't remove therapeutic they moved it from personals to services and they now charge so the number of ads there have been cut by approximately 80%.

Sps should never have been posting under the personals in the first place, the majority of our ads in the Vancouver area have always been in the services section, therapeutic specifically. And those of us suffering by the flooding and spamming, as well as the flagging and deleting, welcome the fact they charge for an ad now and forced everyone to abide by the 48 hour one account rule lol

Www.Escorts-canada.com is still a top option. Now operating 100% outside Canada. (Owned by the same company as lyla.com) Still has loads of traffic. The new company that owns it has some big plans for the network. Many abandoned it when the laws changed but look at the ads on it now in just this last two days...!

And if you must have a bp alternative https://www.leolist.cc/ is also outside north america so it should not have the same issues as bp has.

Terb merb and perb are also outside canada with the same .cc urls

Actually, that's not quite accurate. It doesn't matter where the servers are located. It doesn't matter where you live. It doesn't matter the country you advertise your services for:

If your website has a domain extension operated by a US entity, the US HAS jurisdiction over your website and datas and has the authority to seize it. (sources: https://www.wired.com/2012/03/feds-seize-foreign-sites/ & https://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2083906/claims-com-net-websites-jurisdiction)

In other words, your servers may be located in Switzerland or Bahamas, it doesn't make a difference if your website has a domain extension operated by an American company .

Verisign is US based and operates the followings:

.com .net .name, .gov, .cc, and .tv

For a complete list of domain extensions and the registries who operate them: https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/listing-2012-02-25-en

Lyla, you need to change your domain extension ASAP. Here's a list of the 5 best host countries for data privacy and to keep Uncle Sam's hands out of it: http://nomadcapitalist.com/2013/12/15/top-5-best-countries-host-website-data-privacy/
