Consent

Recommended Posts

Ooohhh my.

Consent is a serious subject and must have a place somewhere between adults (and legally speaking - the state).

IMO - I think this article just went more than over the top. I'm struggling to find words to properly frame the article, but it seems to have confusing jumps from self image issues, pornification, sexualization, humiliation, male hatred, references to photographers.

Sure it would piss me off if someone published nude pics of me without my consent, but I wouldn't come close to the vitriol expressed in this article. I'm unsure of the conclusion. Flame me if you must.

Thanks for sharing FA.

:-) I think the issues arose with the comments she received, and less about the actual posting of the photos. Like she said, she figured she'd be embarrassed for awhile and then it would go away.

But after three years of receiving messages similar to the examples above, I don't think anyone could deny it would affect them.

I personally thought it flowed logically from paragraph to paragraph. I am interested to know where you see the male hatred portion? I don't see it. Or perhaps the tone in which I read it is different than the tone in which you read it?

If you follow the link at the bottom of the article (not the one I posted, but the one after the Artwork credit), it shows the new pictures she had done in an attempt to switch her online naked presence to one where she is a sexual subject, not a sexual object. I think it works. But I'm not sure if it would stop the messages... Hopefully she'll start getting at least an equal amount of positive ones.

I'm not sure I agree with everything that she says in the article but I am pretty sure that I have no idea what it is like to have my privacy invaded in the way hers was and therefore I find it extremely difficult to be critical of how she feels about the abuse she has taken.

I like most men and a lot of women enjoy the image of a woman's body and I do in fact find women to be incredibly sexy in their everyday roles in life... am I guilty of sexualizing them without their consent... I guess I am but I would hope I would never do that in a manner that would make another person uncomfortable.

Just my Opinion

Aren't pics of her at 17 child pornography? Whoever took or distributed those pics could be in trouble.

I'm thinking that sex-ed in schools these days should include "NO NUDE PICS!" Really, isn't it common sense in this day and age that you can't trust any digitized information, no matter how private you think it may be?

But after the fact, this seems like a good way to handle it. You can cower or you can fight back.
