It's a historical novel about the building of a cathedral in the fictional town of Kingsbridge, England. It is set in the middle of the 12th century. If you enjoyed the 'Blade Runner' movies, Gibson's earlier work will probably appeal. He did switch from the 'near future SF' mode to novels set in the present ('Pattern Recognition'/'Spook Country'/'Zero History'), but his last book is a return to the 'near future' approach.
