Book recommendation thread

Recommended Posts

I have been reading a lot lately. Just in a month or so I have read...

The Secrete Daughter, darn forget the author as I donated the book to another... ( highly recommend BTW!)

The Daring Ladies of Lowell by Kate Alcott ( really good too! )

The inventions of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd ( awesome novel)

All the light we can not see, by Anthony Doerr ( not my usual read, but loved it!)

And last I just read ...

The Ghost Bride by Yangzee Choo This was astonishingly amazing novel. I usually prefer history and fact based books, but this was so colorful and compelling I could not put it down!

So now I head to the cottage this weekend, and need another great read, any suggestions? Tell us what book you loved reading!

I'm not familiar with the books on your list so these 2 recommendations may not suit you, but here we go:

"The Sound of One Hand Clapping" by Richard Flanagan. It's set in Tasmania.

"Oscar and Lucinda" by Peter Carey, set mainly in Australia. They made a movie of this book with Ralph Fiennes and Cate Blanchett.

If you are into the crime/mystery genre then anything by James Lee Burke (especially the Robicheaux series), Stieg Larsson (Girl With The Dragon Tattoo novels) or Joe Nesbo (Harry Hole series....and yes that is his name but he is Norwegian so it's pronounced Ho-lay, lol).

As fiskaa said, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy was awesome, with each book being better than the previous one.

At the moment I am well into "Outlander", by Diana Gabaldon. It is the first of a seven book set and I think I am hooked.

I'm a big reader. Love it. Some of my all-time favorites:

'The Glass Castle' by Jeannette Walls (written in over 22 languages, it's a phenomenal book)

'The Book Of Negroes' by Lawrence Hill (he's from Burlington, just outside Toronto)

'How To Make Love Like A Porn Star' by Jenna Jameson (think what you want about her, but there's no denying the woman is a brilliant businesswoman and has a resilient spirit)

A couple of years ago, everyone on my Christmas list got a book mentioned above ('The Five People You Meet In Heaven' by Mitch Albom) as part of their gift from me. I would highly suggest.

'The Dog Stars' by Peter Heller

I second the recommendation for 'Tuesdays with Morrie'.

The ENTIRE outlander series is amazing!!! I wanna read it all again!!!!

I am currently reading 'Mockingbird', a story about a young girl with Autism learning to cope with her brothers death.

I love reading. Keep the recommendations coming!!!!

Books are AMAZING!

It's a weird thing, it's either all or nothing with me. When I get into reading mode, it's all consuming. I will read a book a day for weeks on end... and then it stops as quickly as it starts. I consume the complete bibliographies of authors in a single period, much like tv series marathoning has become the thing.

Recommendations?

Ian Rankin - The inspector Rebus series and the Malcolm Fox series. (19 books and 4 books, two interlaced.) Rebus is a crotchety old Edinburgh cop with relationship and alcohol problems, he drives a crappy car and is often seen in yesterdays clothes... but you like him. The mystery series is fast paced and gritty but ohhhhh so good.

Alan Bradley - The Flavia DeLuce series (6 books). If you loved Harry Potter, you'll love Flavia DeLuce. She's a precocious 11 yr old chemist/evil genius in a crumbling English manor solving crimes in 1950 England. Like Harry Potter, it's an all ages adventure that has moments for everyone... and best of all Alan Bradley is a Canadian author with enormous talent.

Christopher Moore - The man is hilarious. His 15 books are filled with a compendium of the most interesting characters, in the most interesting of situations and some of the most inciteful humour you will ever read. His best is "Lamb, The Gospel according to Jesus's buddy Biff."

Industry related? Michael Faber's - The Crimson Petal and the White. An amazing story centred around a London prostitute named Sugar. It's long, but if you are a true reader you won't be able to put it down. It has been adapted and altered as a 4 part mini series.

The Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin - You watch it religiously, read the books to see what happens in your head before you see it on TV. The books are long... and book four is not the easiest to read, but by the end of the 5th book you will truly appreciate the series even more. Just hope old George finishes all seven books before he kicks the bucket....

Another book series I really enjoyed was The Mayfair Witches by Anne Rice. Never liked her Vampire novels but the Witches series I found to be really good, especially the first book. Read it after having spent a week in New Orleans and being familiar with the settings referenced in the book made it all the more interesting. New Orleans has a very haunted/creepy side to it that Rice brings to life in her novels.

I am defiantly going to look into some of these great suggestions! I ended up reading a novel that is out of my normal genera.

It is a suspenseful web crime novel. The Author is local to NB, Andrew McAllister , the novel is "Unauthorized Access" . I read the entire novel on the weekend. It was really good, ending was a bit common, but still worth the read.

Have finished the Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire Series as well as the 3 short stories of Dunk and Egg. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a somewhat similar fantasy series I can enjoy while waiting for George to finish the Game of Thrones series. I've actually begun to re-read Book 4 and it is as good as my first time through!

Scotia Bank -- Giller Prize Winner -- US Conductors -- Sean Michaels

Interesting story about the invention of an electronic instrument called the Theremin in the first part of the 20's century. The story extends from the Soviet Union, to the USA and back.

There is an unrequited love story, details on the music scene in NY in the 20's and 30's and even some espionage done by the protagonist Lev Theremin.

Very poetically written and never a dull moment.

Just finished "Book of Negros" OMG what a good read! It gives you every emotion imaginable. Now I am reading " I am Malala" Is a bit dry, but interesting read. Her Fathers proves to be way ahead of his country's ideals and their bond is beautiful.
