Ice4fun 78396 Report post Posted November 28, 2014 The Safe Harbour Outreach Project (SHOP) in St. John's which works with sex workers in the province, has written an open letter to Premier Paul Davis, asking for action to delay new Criminal Code provisions in the federal Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act. SHOP says as a former police officer, Davis has more than a passing familiarity with the vulnerability and powerlessness experienced by some sex workers in the province. They says they believe the Act will result in serious harm against sex workers in the province and across Canada. SHOP coordinator Laura Winters says overwhelming evidence shows that the criminalization of sex work contributes to harm against sex workers. She says the Act will expose sex workers to further stigma and discrimination, diminish control over their working conditions, and threaten their health and safety. She is calling on the premier to refer the Act to the Newfoundland and Labrador Court of Appeal before pursuing prosecutions under the new laws.
