Hi ladies and gents... I noticed the tech corner doesn't have a faq for questions (at least questions I get daily) about browsers, virus scanners and what to do. So I was thinking we should start one.

Not sure if I'm allowed to add links or not, so I didn't. But I can add them if it is allowed.

Anyone else that's tech savvy, please feel free to add more!

The idea behind this security stuff to try to prevent what you can from attacking your computer, catching the sneaky viruses and trojans. The more common things can be prevented just by simply doing Windows Updates as they come.

AVG is also a good free anti virus scanner

Keep firewall On

Set proper security protocols for routers

Change default user name and password

Firefox Add-on ...WOT "Web of Trust"

Warns you of spam /attack sites.

It's also good to keep everything patched properly - not all software is good at this. I've found Secunia PSI very helpful for this - you can get it at http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/

I personally use Spybot (free) and Adaware (free) along with AVG. Running the malware programs weekly is all I need to run a clean ship (pc)

For paid AV software, I've been using Kaspersky for the past 2 years, and have had 0 issues with any of the three PCs in my house since installing it.

Best of all, for the past 2 years (and hopefully the trend continues) it seems to go on sale around Christmas for a ridiculously low price.
