Working in Canada as an American

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My name is Naomi. I am an established independent provider in San Francisco, California. I wanted to spend a couple of weeks in Vancouver see if I like it, and maybe relocate. Things are really hard for girls in the US. The very fact that my work is illegal here make things so tense everyday and they guys really try to take advantage. I am not saying you don't have bad clients, but we have some terrible things happening that are common place. The worst things, many don't even feel comfortable talking to the police for.

Anyway, I wanted to get some tips on preparation, advertising, etc. I'd be interested in working with an agency that works with touring girls.

Honestly, I don't even know what to begin to ask, since what I do is basically legal where you are. So whatever knowledge you can drop would be awesome.

Thanks so much in advance.

Naomi

Hey Naomi

Prostitution is legal in Canada in narrow terms.

Outcall is always legal

Street walking is illegal, any form of public solicitation etc

Incall is usually ignored although it is illegal and escorts are sometimes charged and prosecuted if neighbours make complaints.

Incalls out of hotels are generally tolerated although within the narrow definition of the law is technically illegal, so touring ladies seeing clients in their own (the lady's) hotel are operating illegally but are generally ignored so long as they are discrete.

The biggest problem you have is working on a tourist visa, bottom line. I doubt if any agency can hire you legally.

You can work independently, but do not advertise in an American way (usually this means that you won't discuss rates and specific services, or you request a great deal of personal/work info. This won't work in Canada, for the most part, plus it is not necessary. It is legal to discuss rates and services, and preferred by clients to know what the rates include. It is a legal activity, so it is unnecessary for LE to set up stings so you do not need to worry about going to a set up intended to arrest you.) (the exception is in Calgary and Edmonton, because you have to buy an escort license there from the city to work legally -- this will not be possible for a foreigner, no offense lol)

Most likely you will go to Vancouver, because you are already on the west coast. Vancouver is very indy friendly, and working with an mp or agency is not necessary for success. You can easily rent your own apt, work out of the apartment, provided you are discrete, the vancouver police dept could care less as long as you are working safely and do not draw attention from the neighbours lol.

You should do some research regarding the area (maybe on T E R?, or google escort review sites vancouver), check out reviews, rates, services, details etc for Vancouver (ignore all references to asian micros, no indy is in competition with that style or rate) and then follow up by checking out the local sps sites, and the more local advertising area. Rates for sps are higher in Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary, for the most part, compared to other areas of Canada but living expenses are also quite high, but you would be closer to home.

Wow, I am not used to be called a foreigner, let alone being an undocumented worker....Now I know how Mexican's who come here illegally feel!

Thank you for the advice guys.

If anyone has anything else to ad, that would be great. I have another friend from SF that I told about this site.

scottthecanuck and fortunateone both offer some good advice.

One of the great things that Canada has over the United States is that prostitution is legal here, just that many of the activities surrounding it are not. Communication for the purposes of prostitution is probably one of the biggest concerns, you are not allowed to discuss rates, services, etc. in public. But there are usually workarounds to the "communication for the purposes" concerns. I believe that texting, email, PM's and phone calls from a private residence to a private residence is protected, but please correct me if I am wrong. Speaking in public regarding rates and/or services is illegal and this includes, on the streets, in a car, in a building or pretty much anywhere not behind the door of a client's residence, hotel room or room at an MP. No speaking on a cell phone regarding the same in public, but if you are at home I believe you are ok. In my experience a lot of "session's" are arranged by PM's on a forum, email, texts or phone calls. If you do more research you can find the specifics of the criminal code in Canada.

You will have some difficulty working for an agency as you are not a Canadian citizen.

There are lots of girls that work as an indie SP and they travel however wide an area as they choose and go from city to city. Some cities, including Edmonton & Calgary and likely others, do indeed require an "escort license" to work legally, however it is my understanding that a great deal of the indie SP's that travel across Canada do not get "licensed". I have had contact with quite a few SP's that travel across Canada and have not found any that get an escort license for that purpose. A general rule of thumb is that if you are going about your business quietly and not causing a disturbance or causing problems, you are pretty much going to be left alone by law enforcement. However, Calgary does have a reputation of SP's reporting other SP's if they find out where (which hotel) they are working. I would be happy to advise you further on this by PM as I don't want to put too much out on a public forum. Suffice to say that working as an indie SP without an escort license for a particular city is not as big a deal as some would have you believe. If you are not causing problems and are discrete, you should have no problems.

Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary are indeed very indie SP friendly cities as are a great deal of the smaller cities along the way. What you read about working as an indie SP in Vancouver also applies mostly to Edmonton and Calgary.

The cost of living is indeed higher in Western Canada and as such this is reflected in the rates that SP's charge while here. You might want to think about coming up to Canada on a working vacation sometime.

If you send me a PM, there are other resources that I can advise if you would like to explore the possibility of coming to Vancouver or working as an indie SP in Western Canada.

To keep everything 100% legal, don't forget to file a Canadian income tax return.

The CRA (our IRS) doesn't give two hoots where the income originates, if you have work permits, etc., as long as they get their cut.

You'll get credit on your US return for taxes paid to Canada so you won't be double taxed.

Here's some reading if you have trouble sleeping: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tg/t4058/README.html
