In search of Winter....

Recommended Posts

I'm re-posting this here because I posted in the ad section and that was stupid. Love, Doofusface.

Dear northerners, I seek new horizons. I want to move to Whitehorse or Yellowknife, have wanted to for years now. But the rental market scares me. There is nowhere to live, it seems. Do I have this wrong? Is it possible that the housing market is really that impenetrable?

Does anyone know? thanks! xoxoxoxo Winter Lover

ps I should clarify: I've searched every rental website available. It's a matter of finding something that isn't a million dollars per month. Does that exist? Why WHY must you be so unattainable, you cold and beautiful northern provinces? I yearn.

It's not any help, I know, but for general reference purposes ...

It appears that both places have small numbers of apartments, so it doesn't take much to swing the vacancy rates (and, therefore, presumably the rental markets). The vacancy rates seem to be trending downward the last little while.

Vacancy rate in Yellowknife in Oct 2010 for all apartments was 0.9% (16 available units out of 1765), Bachelor apts were 1.6% (1 available unit out of 61, ha ha). Avg rent for bachelor was $1006:

Vacancy rate in Whitehorse (only buildings with 4 or more units were surveyed) in Dec 2010 for apartments was 1.3%. Bachelor apts were 2.6% (3 available unit out of 114). Avg rent for bachelor was $675:

Have you tried contacting any real estate agents in those areas. Sometimes they will broker rentals for people. A friend of mine did this years ago when he moved to Grande Prairie for awhile to work up north. The only option then was bunk with a bunch of guys in an apt. or trailer (if you could find a room) or commute back and forth when not in camp.

Come to Ottawa. It is cold in the winter like the north and a great summer to be outside. Not to mention all the great people.

You LIE! Ottawa's winter is wishy washy :) But it would be better than Halifax's "I never stray beyond the freezing point" Winter. I want a real adversary :)

An Ottawa winter is nancy-ish compared to Winnipeg (coldest ave temp of any "major" city in the world) and if the cold doesn't kill you the mosquitoes in the summer just might :)

Peace

Ugh, if only I would've seen this! (And only if you came when the SO was out of town!) How was your trip? Did you make it up here in the end?

I have an idea Amelia

Why don't you come ice fishing with me for a day next year...I guarantee that while you might enjoy the day out on a frozen lake, any thoughts of living in a northern arctic environment will be gone

And on the plus side, at the end of the day fishing, we could escape to a hotel and find ways to warm up
